Falcon was released by TII, a research institute based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with early versions (Falcon-7B and Falcon-40B) launched in 2023 under a license permitting broad commercial use, at a time when few open-weight models could compete closely with proprietary systems on standard benchmarks. This helped Falcon gain rapid adoption in the open-source AI community and made it one of the notable non-US, non-Big-Tech entrants in the large language model race.
