Grok-2 is xAI's second-generation large language model, released in August 2024 with improved reasoning, coding, and vision capabilities over Grok-1, made available to X Premium users alongside an integrated image-generation feature built on Black Forest Labs' FLUX model.
Overview
Grok-2 marked a significant capability jump for xAI over its debut Grok-1 model, released in beta in August 2024 alongside a smaller, faster sibling variant, Grok-2 mini. xAI reported substantial improvements in reasoning, coding, and instruction-following performance, positioning Grok-2 as competitive with leading contemporaneous models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic on a range of standard benchmarks, a marked step up from Grok-1's positioning relative to GPT-3.5-class models. A notable feature of the Grok-2 release was integrated image generation, built through a partnership with Black Forest Labs (the company founded by former Stability AI researchers behind the FLUX image model family), giving Grok-2 users the ability to generate images directly within the Grok chat interface on X — a capability that drew significant attention, and some controversy, for producing images with comparatively fewer content restrictions than many competing image generators at the time. Grok-2 also introduced vision capabilities, enabling the model to understand and reason about image inputs, and continued xAI's emphasis on real-time integration with data from X for current-events awareness. Grok-2 was initially offered exclusively to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers and, later, via xAI's developer API. Unlike Grok-1, xAI did not immediately open-source Grok-2's weights upon release, keeping it closed as its commercial flagship model until xAI later made Grok-2's weights available under a research and commercial license in 2025, following its practice of eventually open-sourcing older-generation models after newer ones (Grok-3, then Grok-4) had superseded them as the company's frontier offering.
