Definition
Nutanix is a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform that combines compute, storage, and virtualization into a single software-defined system running on standard x86 servers.
Overview
Traditional data centers separate compute, storage, and networking into distinct hardware tiers managed independently. Hyperconverged infrastructure collapses these into a single scale-out cluster of standard servers, and Nutanix, founded in 2009, was one of the pioneers of this model. Its Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric pools local server storage into shared, resilient storage without a separate SAN, while its own hypervisor, AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor, based on KVM), provides virtualization — though Nutanix clusters can also run VMware vSphere or Hyper-V instead. Management happens through Prism, Nutanix's unified control plane for provisioning VMs, monitoring cluster health, and handling data protection and disaster recovery across one or more clusters. Because nodes are added simply by racking more standard servers, capacity scales linearly without the forklift upgrades often associated with traditional SAN-based infrastructure. Nutanix has since expanded beyond its original HCI core into hybrid- and multi-cloud management, offering ways to run the same Nutanix Cloud Platform on-premises and extend workloads into public clouds, positioning itself as infrastructure for organizations seeking cloud-like operational simplicity without giving up on-premises control. It is often mentioned alongside Proxmox in this space. It is often mentioned alongside Hybrid Cloud in this space.
